Three Limpopo police officers — including one woman — have been arrested in separate investigations into theft and corruption, the South African Police Service (SAPS) confirmed on Thursday.

The arrests were effected on Wednesday by the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit, assisted by the Polokwane Tactical Response Team.

🚔 Case One: Theft from a Detainee

Detail Information
Accused 46-year-old male police officer
Charges Two counts of theft
Allegation Complainant's bank card unlawfully obtained while in police custody
Case Registered Burgersfort SAPS, December 2023
Amount Withdrawn R9,000 (two withdrawals)
First Appearance Praktiseer Magistrate's Court, Thursday

The investigation established that two withdrawals totalling R9,000 were made from the complainant's bank account.

The matter was referred to the Director of Public Prosecutions, who directed that the officer be charged. A J50 warrant of arrest was subsequently issued, and the suspect was arrested.

🚔 Case Two: R1,000 Bribe from a Foreign National

Detail Information
Accused Two police officials (aged 33 and 47)
Charges Corruption
Allegation Unlawful solicitation and receipt of R1,000
Complainant Foreign national
Case Registered Ohrigstad SAPS, August 2026
Appearance Praktiseer Magistrate's Court, Thursday

It is alleged that the complainant was taken to his place of residence after police officials attended to a complaint involving a suspected counterfeit R200 banknote.

The officials allegedly demanded R1,000 from the complainant in exchange for not arresting him for allegedly being in the country illegally.

The money was handed over, and the complainant was released. J50 warrants of arrest were issued against both officials.

👮 Provincial Commissioner Responds

Provincial Commissioner of Limpopo, Lieutenant General Jan Petrus Scheepers, welcomed the arrests and commended the Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit.

"SAPS in Limpopo will continue to take decisive action against members who are alleged to abuse their positions of authority for personal gain," Scheepers said.

He reiterated that SAPS members are expected to uphold the law and conduct themselves with the highest levels of integrity, professionalism, and accountability.

📢 TMGNews Verdict

Three officers. Two separate cases. One common thread: those sworn to uphold the law allegedly broke it.

The first case is especially disturbing. A person in police custody — vulnerable, detained, unable to protect their belongings — allegedly had their bank card taken and R9,000 withdrawn. If the complainant cannot trust the police to protect them while in custody, who can they trust?

The second case is a classic abuse of power: officers allegedly using the threat of arrest to extort R1,000 from a foreign national. It is a small sum, but the principle is enormous. Corruption at any scale corrodes public trust.

The arrests are a positive sign. The Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit is doing its job. The J50 warrants were issued, and the officers were brought in. That is how the system should work.

But the deeper question remains: How many cases never get reported? How many victims of police corruption stay silent because they fear the very people who are supposed to protect them?

SAPS says it will "continue to take decisive action." South Africans will be watching to see if that action extends beyond arrests — to prosecution, conviction, and consequence.
