WEATHER WARNING: COLD FRONT BRINGING RAIN, WIND + SNOW THIS LONG WEEKEND

Ga-Rankuwa, take note!

The South African Weather Service
is warning of a big cold front hitting South Africa this long weekend. It’s going to be cold, wet, windy and even snowy in some areas.

WHAT TO EXPECT:

Sunday 9 August
The cold front hits Western Cape and Northern Cape first. Expect:
- Cold to very cold temps
- Heavy rain and strong winds
- Rough seas
- Snow on mountains

Monday 10 August
The system moves inland to Free State, KZN, Mpumalanga and Eastern Cape.
- Rain and showers spreading across the country
- SNOW expected on mountain passes in Free State, KZN and Mpumalanga
- Gauteng will also get cold and wet conditions

SAWS says there’s even a small chance of light snow in some other high-lying areas.

THE MAIN DANGERS SAWS WARNED ABOUT:
1. Flooding - Low areas, roads, bridges and informal settlements could flood from heavy rain
2. Strong winds - Trees falling, roof damage, power cuts, dangerous driving
3. Rough seas - Dangerous for anyone near the coast
4. Extreme cold - Risk for elderly, children, homeless and livestock
5. Snow on passes - Roads could close. Travel will be hazardous

WHAT YOU MUST DO:
SAWS is urging everyone to:
- Stay updated - Follow SAWS warnings
- Motorists - Drive carefully, avoid mountain passes if snowing
- Farmers - Protect livestock from cold
- Communities - Check on vulnerable people
- Everyone - Keep warm, charge phones, and have emergency numbers ready

Disaster teams are on standby.

SAWS quote: “We encourage the public, motorists, farmers, and disaster management authorities to remain informed... and to take the necessary precautions as this weather system progresses.”

This is going to be a proper winter weekend. Stock up on blankets, paraffin, and food.
